The Tom Harmon Family
The Center, founded in 1987, was one of the area’s first diabetes education programs. On Oct. 1, 2004, the Center became a program of The Research Foundation, a local non-profit organization committed to strengthening the community and empowering people to live healthier, productive lives through our health education and scholarship programs.
In 2007, it was renamed the Harmon Diabetes Center to honor the Harmon family and their generous support of The Research Foundation. In October of 2011, Centerpoint Diabetes Center in Independence merged with Harmon Diabetes Center. The Center offers diabetes education and support to patients battling the life-changing illness.
The Harmon Diabetes Center has been recognized by the American Diabetes Association as meeting the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management education since 1999. Approximately 500 patients are seen each year through the Center where they learn about meal planning, physical activity, blood sugar monitoring, medicine options, how to reduce risks and lifetime self-management skills.
The Harmon Diabetes Center is conveniently located with free parking on the campus of Research Medical Center and in Independence on US Hwy 24.

Results
When you are considering investing your time in diabetes education, you want to know the results you can expect. Ultimately, you have to do the hard work of changing some behaviors and making good choices for your health. We can’t do that for you, but we can arm you with knowledge of your condition, how food is utilized by your body for energy, how to count calories, carbs and fat, and balance your food intake with your level of exercise.
