Most insurance policies and Medicare cover 9 hours of diabetes education at the time of your diabetes diagnosis. Additionally, you may also be covered for an additional 2 hours yearly for refresher training. If you don’t have insurance, there are scholarships at Harmon Diabetes Center that can help you get the education you need.

Diabetes Education Program
The Harmon Diabetes Center provides you with the information you need for self-care and keeping your diabetes under control. The center was originally founded in 1987 and was one of the area’s first diabetes education programs. Our program received recognition from the American Diabetes Association in 1989. Our instructors include registered nurses and dieticians who are Certified Diabetes Educators. Classes available at 2188 E. Meyer Boulevard on the Research Medical Center campus or at 5701 W. 119th Street on the Menorah Medical Center Campus. In the Diabetes Education program, you’ll learn about:

  • Diabetes truths and myths
  • Meal planning
  • Physical activity
  • Blood sugar monitoring
  • Reducing risks
  • Accessing medical care and supplies
  • Lifetime self-management skills

The first session of the 4-class series will last an additional hour from the time posted in the schedule. Call the Harmon Diabetes Center so we can ensure you begin the Diabetes Education program at the start of a new session. Also available in two sessions of 4-hours each "Step" class.

Diabetes Support Group
Get the support you need to make and maintain the changes helping you manage your diabetes. Learn tips and techniques from our Certified Diabetes Educators as well as sharing successes and challenges with others. Guest speakers often attend sessions. No reservations are needed to attend and there is no charge for participating.

Weigh-to-Be
An 8-week weight loss program for individuals 17 years of age or older. The class is conducted by a Registered Dietician and Certified Diabetes Educator. You get a personalized meal and exercise plan and learn how to count exercise calories to balance caloric intake. Your progress and results will be reviewed by a Registered Dietician. There are no special foods to purchase—you’ll learn how to lose weight to reach and maintain your optimum health. The program is $40.00 per person for the first month; $35.00 for each consecutive month thereafter. Spouses enjoy a discount of $65.00 per couple for the first month; $60.00 for each consecutive month.

Healthy Behaviors
Healthy Behaviors is the follow up class for graduates of the Weigh-to-Be program who have reached their health goals. Meet with a Registered Dietician for 15-minutes each week to review your progress and maintain your commitment. Cost is $15.00 weekly for individuals or $25.00 per couple.

Insulin starts, Insulin Pump Starts and Adjustments
We will work side by side with your physician to make the transition to insulin injections and/or using a insulin pump as effortless as possible. If prescribed by you physician, we will also work side by side to frequently adjust your insulin dosages, to allow you to get a more rapid control over your blood glucose.
